Synopsis
Series in which Professor Lewis Wolpert draws on his own experiences of depression as he examines its causes, diagnosis and treatment. He talks to fellow sufferers, his own psychiatrist and therapist, and to a professor researching the effects of childhood influences on mental health in adults. In three parts: 1) Introduction: a overview of depression; 2) Diagnosis: considers the difficulties of diagnosing depression. Wolpert talks to a psychiatrist who trains GPs to recognise its symptons. Also considers children’s susceptibility to depression; 3) Treatment: looks at antidepressants, cognitive therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, St John’s wort.
