Synopsis
A radio series from BBC English, the teaching arm of the BBC World Service which introduces and explains the main schools of literary criticism in the 20th century. Each critic is asked to illustrate their points with reference to just three texts: ‘Macbeth’, ‘Hard Times’ and ‘Lines Composed Above Tintern Abbey’. 1: The Traditional Critic. 2: I.A. Richards and Practical Criticism. 3: F.R. Leavis and the Great Tradition’. 4: William Empson and ‘ambiguity’. 5: The New Criticism. 6: Structuralism. 7: Deconstruction. 8: Feminist Criticism. 9: Freudian Criticism. 10: Marxist Criticism. 11: New Historicism. 12; Colonial Discourse.
Each programme contains an interview with an expert in the field (e.g. David Lodge on Structuralism) or, with the olders schools, archive material is mixed with interviews.
