- Synopsis
- Compilation video featuring 1) Humphrey Jennings’ classic wartime film ‘Listen to Britain’ (1941, 19 min): ‘The music of a people at war - the sound of life in Britain by night and day.' Records the roar of Spitfires and tanks, the noise of furnaces and factories, the march of miners and soldiers, music and songs in trains, dance halls, canteens, and the war-time concerts at the National Gallery. With Flanagan and Allen, Dame Myra Hess and the RAF Orchestra.; 2) ‘Myra Hess’ (1945): shows Dame Myra Hess at one of her National Gallery concerts. She plays a movement from Beethoven’s ‘Appasionata’ Sonata; 3) (1950): Denis Brain and Denis Matthews play Beethoven’s Sonata for Horn Opus 17, with an explanatory introduction by Dennis Brain. These artists were closely associated with Myra Hess’s National Gallery concerts.
