Lipid Structure (4 Parts)

Synopsis
A complete, fully-structured teaching programme using a presenter, still and animated graphics, models, demonstrations and film animation. The programme will stand in its own right but is intended to be seen as the first of a series of four videotapes on lipid structure.
Part 1: The definition and classification of lipids, the structure and function of triglycerides - with particular emphasis on their hydrophobic nature, and fat as an energy store.
Part 2: The structure of glycerol and sphingosine-based phospholipids; their amphipathic nature and ability to form complexes with proteins and other lipids; general principles of soluble lipo-protein complexes. A special feature is the use of an animated film sequence to show the possible arrangements of lipoprotein complexes in cell membranes.
Part 3 Glycolipids - the basic structures of cerebrosides and gangliosides - and takes a closer look at fatty acids; the importance of unsaturation the differences between animal and plant fats, essential fatty acids and prostaglandins.
Part 4 deals with the structures of the fat-soluble vitamins, the structure of cholesterol and its relation to atherosclerosis, and cholesterol as a precursor of bile/acids/sex hormones/adrenal cortex hormones.
