Concerned with the use of modern semi-conductor devices to produce light for fibre-optic communication systems. Using computer animations, discusses some of the more important properties of light-emitting diodes and semi-conducting lasers. Looks at one of the latest developments in this field, the double-heterostructure semi-conductor laser, and its use in long distance optical communication.*
