Life Without Heart and Lungs
- Synopsis
- The surgical repair of human hearts requires that the heart itself be temporarily out of action during the period of operation. Heart-lung machines are available to provide circulating blood to the brain and other organs during this time. Until recently the use of such machines was limited in time to a matter of hours only but recent advances have greatly extended this time scale. The programme indicates the direction of this research and shows how new artificial lungs can support life for many days at a time.
