As is Your Due
- Synopsis
- Follows the history of degrees for women at the University of Cambridge. Despite the fact that there have been two women’s colleges there since the 1860s, women were not considered to be official members of the university until 1948. In practical terms this meant that they could not use the library, could only attend lectures and take examinations by special permission, and, no matter what their academic achievements, were not entitled to a degree. On 4 July 1998, 900 women attended three ceremonies at the university to honour the work they did over 50 years ago. This programme shows the ceremonies at the Senate House and interviews women at Girton and Newnham during the weekend. It also includes archive material from both colleges.
