Life at the Water’s Edge

Synopsis
Explores the ecological basis of wetlands explaining the ways in which they can be beneficial in providing a moderation for flooding. The water hyacinth is discussed as an example of what starts as a pest in the wetland becoming a valuable component. The deleterious effects of irrigation and drainage are illustrated by the examples of clams in Tunisia, deforestation in Sri Lanka and agricultural drainage in the United Kingdom.
