Last of the Hiding Tribes, The

Synopsis
Adrian Cowell traces the history of three tribes of the Amazon rainforest that are on the edge of extinction: the Panara, the Uru Eu Wau Wau, and the Ava-Canoeiro. The films focus on the dramas of individuals caught up in the race to bring ‘civilisation’ to the Amazon. With drawings and archive film of the setting up on the Indian Protection Service by Marshall Rondon.
1: Examines the threats to the Amazonian Panara by contact with civilisation. Follows the many courageous attempts by Claudio Villas Boas, the leading explorer of Brazil’s Indian Protection Service in the 1960s, to contact the Panara, hidden deep in the forest, and save them from extinction.
2: Filmed over 17 years, this film links the abduction of a child in 1969 to the demise of the Uru Eu Wau Wau tribe, when efforts to find the boy brought them into contact with fatal diseases (broadcast title: THE FATE OF THE KIDNAPPER).
3: Follows the efforts of Brazil’s Indian Protection Agency from 1993 to locate the elusive Ava-Canoeiro tribe to warn them about the imminent construction of a dam that would flood theri forests. Members of tribe had been massacred in 1962, and by 1996 probably extinct.
