Languedoc Scorpion, The

Synopsis
Details of the life of the Languedoc or yellow scorpion and its habitat. Anatomy. Behaviour - digging a new hole in earth; two individuals meet, fight, the weaker retires; capture of a cricket, stung, eaten head end first; external digestion, with enzymes secreted from gut, juices taken into gut. Growth. Female dance prior to mating; passage of spermatophores; male sticks spermatophores to rock, female dragged on top so that spermatophore enters valve of female. Spermatophore structure shown. Gestation. Parturition, 6 hours - thirty to seventy young, all wrapped in separate membranes, produced. Young emerge abdomen first; shed membrane, climb on to female’s back and cling on by suction cups; do not eat; four to eight days later cast skins; second stage active - after a few days the young leave the female and go to ground for good. After eight to ten days they hunt and thereafter fend for themselves.*
