L S Lowry

Synopsis
Approaches familiar paintings of L S Lowry in an unusual and revealing way. The notion of Lowry as a ‘realist’ painter of the industrial landscape comes under scrutiny, and his work is set in the context of the industrial decline of Lancashire, using photographic evidence of the slum conditions. Although the emphasis is on Lowry’s industrial scenes, examples of his landscapes and seascapes are included.
