Know Your Customer

Synopsis
A bank manager moves to the Town Hall branch and finds that he has to restrict his golfing activities while he gets to know his corporate customers. His golfing partner, a civil engineer, turns up his university notes of some 20 years ago and finds a ‘Rapid Assessment Form’ which his accounting lecturer had devised. It consists of seven accounting ratios calculated for each of three successive years. The bank manager tries the form as a means of high-speed assessment but finds that in one case he is getting poor readings on a public company which has always been regarded as a good risk. Is the form wrong, or is the company no longer good? In part two the bank manager meets the company’s managing director and finds that there are limitations on the use of accounting ratios.
