Klana Topeng: Classical Mask Dance from Yogyakarta, Java
- Subtitle
- Classical mask dance from Yogyakarta, Java
- Synopsis
- Klana Topeng, the love dance of the proud King Klono, is one of the classical Javanese solo dances. It derives from the Wayang Kulit, the original large mask-play developed in Central Java. The Wayang Kulit is a shadow play with flat leather puppets, which bears a close relationship to Klana Topeng in its body postures and poses, and in its costumes and accessories. It is still very popular today. In the past the dance was part of a large mask-play known throughout Central Java at the princely courts and also among the people. Today it is a theatre dance in its own right, and it has an important place in the present-day classical dance repertoire. The film analyses a number of characteristic poses and movements, after which the complete Klana Topeng is shown.
