Subtitle
Behavioural psychotherapy
Alternative title
Behavioural Psychotherapy: Key Topics in Modern Psychiatry
Synopsis
Introduces the main themes of behavioural psychotherapy (BP): its indication in certain specific conditions (e.g. phobic disorders); its possible appropriateness to others (e.g. social skills disorders); its unsuitability for yet others (e.g. acute schizophrenia). Describes and demonstrates the underlying ‘exposure’ principle, and the variety of approaches to treatment ‘in vivo’ and in fantasy. Presents evidence on the comparative success of BP in treating different disorders, and describes long-term effectiveness. Shows the role of co-therapists and of patient cooperation in record-keeping, and emphasises the importance of monitoring measurable outcomes. Mentions BP’s role in treating sexual dysfunction.
