Kayapo, The

Synopsis
The lives of the Kayapo tribe of Brazil changed dramatically in 1982 when gold was found on their land and 3000 Brazilians invaded their territory to excavate one of the largest gold mines in the world. The number of prospectors multiplied tenfold and the Kayapo were forced to adapt and become ‘businessmen’ or see their traditional way of life destroyed. Questions how the new-found wealth will affect Kayapo society and values, and how the miners will be controlled. The film focuses on the conflicts and determination of a group of people trying to survive and maintain their ethnic identity against overpowering odds. Contrasts the reactions of two groups of Kayapo to outside influence - the Kapot and the Gorotire.
