Kama Wosi: Music in the Trobriand Islands

Subtitle
Music in the Trobriand Islands
Synopsis
Set in three inland villages on the largest of the Trobriand Islands. The poetry of songs and the art of singing are a major part of the Trobriand aesthetic traditions. Through the translation of song lyrics, a narrative is provided linking village activities, ideas and beliefs. Many of the songs are laid behind images of Trobriand life; the rest are seen in performance. Shows Trobriand musical instruments being played: a drum ensemble that accompanies the dance Bevetayobu, conch shells, Pan pipes, a version of the western recorder (called pigolela - derived from ‘piccolo’), children’s leaf whistles, and a flute made from the stem of the pawpaw (papao) tree - used by young people for calling a lover.
