Jessye Norman

Synopsis
A biography of the classical singer born in Georgia, later working in Berlin and now settled in London. Jessye Norman talks about her cultural roots. this is intercut with newsreel footage of the American civil rights movement in the 1950s and ‘60s. Musical illustrations include her return to the London opera stage in the title role of Strauss’ ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’, Berg’s ‘Altenberg Lieder’ and the lament from Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’.

Arts on Film Archive offers on-line access to a large range of films on art produced in the United Kingdom since the 1950s, and is a unique record of British and international post-war art, as well as of documentary film-making in the UK.
