Japan: Building the Zen Way
- Synopsis
- Introduces the contemporary architecture of Japan, where architects and designers enjoy great public fame and prestige. Looks at world-renowned architects Arata Isozaki and Fumihiko Maki and at the new concepts of living in personalised, minimal structures designed by Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito and Hiroshi Hara. Shows Isozaki’s work with is minimalist, post-modern style; Maki’s buildings, designed to reflect continuity, assurance and stability; Hara’s designs which are experiments in form and structure and brutal and difficult to warm to; and Ando’s buildings which reflect an architecture of denial where decoration is kept to a minimum in order to make occupants aware of their physical environment and themselves.
