It at Work: ‘For Your Information’

Synopsis
Developments in information technology have greatly changed the way most of us work, and there is more in store. This video visits two of the world’s leading computer companies, Intel and Microsoft, whose future plans including extending the PC revolution to the home. Explains the growing interest in ‘convergence’ of the computer and the television and telecommunication industries. Using unique footage of early high-definition television demonstrations, traces the parallel developments of advanced television and interactive computer technologies. Shows video compression on a chip, open computing, multimedia programmes, and the possible multi-channel television in the home, being developed in the British Telecom research laboratories. Executives from Intel, Microsoft and the QVC home shopping network explain their visions of the information. Further discusses the motives and mechanisms of technological change.
