It: A Link in the Chain

Synopsis: British Home Stores was one of the first of the big retailers to introduce computer-based technologies into its stores. Like most investment in new technologies, the cost has been justified in terms of staff savings (staff who worked mostly at lower levels counting stock, pricing items and serving the public). It soon became clear that the real benefits would only be realised when the company learned to use the sales information that these systems could produce to fine tune the buying and distribution decisions being made at at more senior levels. Looks at the implications of this sort of investment for organisations like BHS and at the way it is changing the work that people do.
