Island, The

Synopsis
Video recording using a single camera of a performance of ‘The Island’ (1973) by Athol Fugard, scripted with performers John Kani and Winston Ntshona, directed by Athol Fugard, designed by the company, produced by the Market Theatre of Johannesburg, recorded at the Lyttleton Theatre in February 2000. This was the final revival with the original cast, who also devised the play about two prisoners on Robben Island. It was the first play to show defiance of apartheid, and played illegally and without a script in South Africa.
