Irish Question, The: A Case Study in Media Control

Synopsis
Features excerpts from ‘Mother Ireland’, ‘16 Dead’ and ‘Behind the Mask’ and explains why they were not broadcast. Producers explain the problems they have making programmes about Ireland and problems of stereotyping and self-censorship are discussed. Governments have long put pressure on broadcasters to portray events in Ireland in a way which favours their policies. In 1988 the ‘broadcasting ban’ was passed to restrict coverage of various Irish political groups. Explaining the reasons behind the ban, discusses the history of the troubles in Ireland and explains the background to the conflict between programme makers and the authorities.
