Introduction to Structural Design, An

Synopsis
Shows how structural engineers select the objectives, material and structural arrangement for a structure, using the Humber bridge as an example. Includes sections on methods of calculation of the size of the members, once the arrangement and material has been selected. The importance of choice of good structural arrangement is emphasised as this is likely to affect the cost by a factor of five or more. This is illustrated by comparing student solutions to a design brief for a crane jib.
