Synopsis
1: Introduces basic genetic concepts using real-life examples and 3D graphics. Covers: the structure of chromosomes and DNA molecules; how genes carry instructions for certain characterics, proteins and amino acids; messenger RNA; transfer RNA; the stages of mitosis; how genetic mutation occurs. Possible effects of mutation are shown in cases of achondroplasia and Down’s syndrome.
2: FAMILY PATTERNS. Examines similarities and diversities of family patterns resulting from genetic inheritance. Covers: meiosis and mitosis; sex determination; identical and fraternal twins ; recessive and dominant expression of genes, using cystic fibrosis and Huntington’s disease as examples; genetic causes of inherited conditions such as achondroplasia, eye colour, Down’s syndrome, Kleinfelter’s syndrome, Turner’s syndrome.
