Synopsis
A general introduction to bacteria, describing their basic morphology. Molecular sequencing techniques are contributing to the discovery of new species as well as to phylogenetic classification. Discusses the classification schemes of Woese and Bergey’s manual and introduces the major bacterial groups. Describes the principal methods of identifying and culturing bacteria. Illustrates with specific examples the implications and effects of bacteria on man, in industry and the environment. Approximately two hours of teaching material.
