Synopsis
Shows: the contrasts between scientific fact and the predictions of science fiction. Features of the earth and its atmosphere. Circular orbits and escape conditions. Rocket technology: specific impulse, fuels, limitations on payload and structural masses, staging. Alternative propulsion technology: the jet engine, the ram jet, the SCRAM jet and their limitations. Current and proposed vehicles: space shuttle, Orient Express and Hotol. The programme is extensively illustrated by archive material provided by sources such as NASA as well as graphics sequences explaining the principles involved.
