Integration Challenge, The

Synopsis
Computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) allows the designer to pass a product design and have that product manufactured automatically by computer-controlled machines. CIM embraces many disciplines including computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), robotics, automated stock control and job scheduling. Describes a commercial application offered by consultant Arthur Andersen whose laboratory has combined the project management system ARTEMIS with IBM’s DBII relational database. Demonstrates the five stages of CIM by charting the progress of a spindle from design to delivery.
