Integrating the Micro into Home Economics

Synopsis
Looks at how one teacher organises a practical nutrition lesson for a class of mixed-ability third-year pupils using a microcomputer. Based on the topic of school meals, the session allows some of the pupils to develop their recipes for high-nutrition food which competes with the school canteen on price and presentation, whilst other groups work unsupervised on computer-assisted projects analysing their surveys of popular choices from the school canteen menu and investigating the nutritional implications of these. The teacher also discusses how the microcomputer has been an important tool in her preparation of teaching materials.
