Infection of Clover by Root-Nodule Bacteria
- Synopsis
- Describes the normal processes of infection of clover root hairs by root-nodule bacteria and subsequent nodule formation. Shows the root-hair surface using scanning electron microscopy, the initiation of infection and infection thread growth by time-lapse cinemicrography and growing root hairs and nodules; and by means of stained sections the release of the bacteria and their development within the nodule. The time-lapse sequences are of special interest in showing co-ordinated growth of the infection thread and its contained bacteria and the remarkable behaviour of the associated root-hair cell nucleus.
