Synopsis

Examines the growing globalisation of the high-tech industry. Producers of televisions, video players and sound systems have had to form closer relationships with the producers of related software (videocassettes, audiocassettes, CDs) carrying the films and music consumers want. This liaison is also a cultural one. The hardware industry is dominated by the Japanese but software production is vigorous in the West. Hollywood is still an important centre for film and television production, and the music industry is strong on both sides of the Atlantic. Because of this, the big hardware manufacturers have decided that, rather than establish agreements with software producers, they should by them outright. Sony bought into CBS records and later in 1990 bought Columbia Pictures. Matsushita, which owns JVC and Panasonic, bought Universal Studios.
