Industry of Culture, The
- Synopsis
- Examines the growing globalisation of the high-tech industry. Producers of televisions, video players and sound systems have had to form closer relationships with the producers of related software (videocassettes, audiocassettes, CDs) carrying the films and music consumers want. This liaison is also a cultural one. The hardware industry is dominated by the Japanese but software production is vigorous in the West. Hollywood is still an important centre for film and television production, and the music industry is strong on both sides of the Atlantic. Because of this, the big hardware manufacturers have decided that, rather than establish agreements with software producers, they should by them outright. Sony bought into CBS records and later in 1990 bought Columbia Pictures. Matsushita, which owns JVC and Panasonic, bought Universal Studios.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
