Synopsis
Shows industrial developments that transformed the cottage industries of the 18th century into the power-driven factories of the 19th. Darby’s introduction of coke iron smelting mill leads to Huntsman’s steel production in Sheffield and on to Bessemer’s converter. Describes the invention and development of the steam engine. Inventions in the textile industry are described together with developments in communications and transport.
