In the Balance

Synopsis
Shows the two most commonly occurring acid-base disturbances, respiratory and metabolic acidosis. Respiratory acidosis is shown in a patient who has a flail chest after a motor accident and metabolic acidosis is shown in a patient who has had a cardiac arrest. The chemistry is explained using simple animation and the treatment of these two forms of acid-base disturbances is demonstrated. Other acid-base balance disturbances are mentioned but no attempt is made at an advanced academic treatment of the subject.
