In Search of Cool Ground: The Mursi Trilogy. 2: The Kwegu

Subtitle
Kwegu, The
Synopsis
A study of the 500 Kwegu and 5000-strong Mursi, two tribes in south-east Ethiopia whose ways of life have become totally interdependent. Depicts the almost feudal relationship between the tribes, whereby every Kwegu has his Mursi patron who takes advantage of his talents for navigation, honey-gathering and metalwork. In exchange the Mursi patron offers security - defending his Kwegu from attack by other members of the stronger tribe - and the all-important cattle without which, in the complicated tribal rituals of birth pride, no Kwegu marriage can take place and hence no Kwegu children can be born. This mutually profitable relationship cannot last much longer. Due to falling birth rates among the Kwegu and the acceptance of once taboo marriages, the Kwegu are gradually being absorbed into the Mursi tribe.
