In Conversation with Peter Lomas: A Critique of Psychoanalysis

Subtitle
Critique of psychoanalysis, A
Synopsis
Michael Jacobs talks to Peter Lomas, who trained as a psychoanalyst but has since become deeply critical of what he sees as a largely impersonal and withholding set of techniques. He helped found the Guild of Psychotherapy and then set up a training course known as ‘The Outfit’, centered on student-directed learning. He has published a number of books analysing the therapeutic relationship. In 3 parts:
1: Valued aspects of the psychoanalytic practice; valued aspects of theory; criticisms of psychoanalytic theory; criticisms of technique; the value of emotional responses in the therapist; the value of Rogerian therapy.
2: The relevance of the past; the Oedipus complex explored; parent/child and lover/marital relationships compared to the therapy relationship; salvation and damage of the therapy relationship; technique as a defence against emotional involvement; validating perceptions of the past.
3: The application of Lomas’ ideas by trainees; the value of personal therapy and supervision; self-disclosure by the therapist; the client’s need for a response; holding and touch in therapy; key features in training as therapists; parallels between therapy and training.
