- Synopsis
- Examines the influence of humanism in painting, sculpture and architecture. In 9 sections: 1) Signs of Change: compares the frescoes of Benozzo Gozzoli in the chapel of the Medici Palace, Florence, with those by Andrea Mantegna in the Camera Picta of the Ducal Palace in Mantua; 2) Antiquity as Status: looks at the sculped portal of the Medici Bank in Milan, the facade of the Certosa in Pavia, and the tombo of Gian Galeazzo Visconti inside; 3) Sculpture: Responses to Antiquity: looks at Donatello’s marbled ‘David’ and bronze ‘David, Michelangelo’s ‘Bacchus’ and Giambologna’s ‘Rape of the Sabine Women’; 4) Gesture and Rhetoric: compares Donatello’s Cavalcanti ‘Annunciation’ with Bernardo Rosselino’s tomb for Leonardo Bruni, both in Santa Croce, Florence.
