Immunology in Focus. Part 3: Cellular Mechanisms of the Immune Response

Subtitle
Cellular mechanisms of the immune response
Synopsis
Shows the immune system in standby mode, with lymphocytes constantly patrolling the periphery until triggered by a specific encounter with an invader. Shows the response to the invader mounted by those cells whose specificity enables them to recognise it as foreign. Describes the cellular interactions necessary to generate a successful immune reponse, with emphasis on the importance of antigen-presenting cells in the processing and presentation of antigen, and the central role of the T helper cells in producing the lymphokines (interleukins) necessary for both antibody synthesis and cell-mediated immunity. Demonstrates the importance of T suppressor cells in damping down responses, and in protecting the body’s own cells from attack. Covers the effector mechanisms in immunity. Also describes the mechanisms by which activated cytotoxic cells can kill cells bearing the appropriate antigens.
