- Synopsis
- Professor Abdus Salam, a 1979 Nobel Laureate, has worked for 20 years towards the ‘grand unification’, the dream of physicists since Einstein that all of nature - the matter it comprises and the forces which shape it - can be unified within a single framework. He talks about Einstein’s theories and the progress made towards the unification of the forces of gravity, electro-magnetism, the weak and the strong nuclear forces. He refers to various major international conferences including one in 1967 where his research results were virtually ignored. Then followed a period of increasing acceptance up to his receiving a Nobel Prize in 1979. He also speaks of the lack of facilities for scientific research in developing countries, especially in his native Pakistan, and mentions current experiments at the CERN particle accelerator near Geneva.
