Images of Women
- Synopsis
- Works from the collection of the Leeds City Art Galleries provide a varied critical study of images of women. The works range from Victorian narratives by Tissot and Waterhouse, and high-minded embodiments of national virtues, to the tradition of the nude, including works by Epstein and Henry Moore. Bruce McLean’s ‘Exit the Model’ is an ironic comment on that tradition, while works by women artists Gwen John and Elaine Kowalsky sharpen the spectator’s awareness of the conventions govenrning the portrayal of women by male artists.
