Images of Peterloo
- Synopsis
- The ‘Peterloo Massacre’ took place in 1819, when a crowd demonstrating in Manchester for political reform was violently dispersed by the local yeomanry cavalry. The prints which depicted the incident are analysed, providing a case study of the way in which public opinion and propaganda shape the imagery of even apparently ‘documentary’ scenes and of caricatures. The examples are drawn from the collections of the British Museum and from archive sources in Manchester.
