Hydrofoil Ventilation Research

Synopsis
Explains how the ventilation effect on a hydrofoil blade travelling through water, can cause instability to the craft, and how a recent boat has been designed to use the ventilation effect to advantage. Further research on ventilation has been carried out at the University of Leeds using the water tunnel in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Various approaches are shown including an oil-smeared blade, ‘dot-bar’ flash photography to examine the flow at a short distance from the blade, and high-speed photography to investigate the actual moment of breakdown to the ventilated state. The method of operation of the two water channels in the Department is shown.
