Apius and Virginia by ‘R B’

Synopsis
Based on Chaucer’s ‘Physician’s Tale’, in which a Roman father beheads his only daughter to save her from the lust of a wicked judge, this 1560’s ‘heroine’ play is a quintessentially English crossbreed of popular Senecan tragedy with homebred exempleary drama, in which morality characters like Conscience and Justice and the vice Haphazard rub shoulders with historical personages and knockabout comics.
