Description
This report shows Ofcom’s latest research on consumer attitudes and trends in violence shown on UK TV programmes before and soon after the 9pm watershed. The research looks at how violence on TV has changed since Ofcom issued guidelines to broadcasters in 2011 to avoid programmes being shown before 9pm that might be unsuitable for children.

There are two separate reports: one focuses on public attitudes towards violence on television among people from various age and socio-economic groups; the second looks at four soap operas - Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Eastenders and Coronation Street - noting that the level of violence in these programmes has changed over the years, and that violence in soap operas is generally signposted well in advance so that viewers are unlikely to be surprised by it.
