Description

One of 15 narrated episodes of Wilkie Collins’ 1862 novel No Name, set in West Somersetshire. Magdalen Vanstone, finding she and her sister Norah are illegitimate, has deceived her cousin Noel into marriage to retrieve her inheritance, but Noel’s housekeeper Mrs Lecount has made her master aware he married an imposter. Episode covers Mrs Lecount persuading Noel to make another will in favour of Admiral Bartram and compose a secret letter instructing the Admiral to pass the inheritance to his son George Bartram; Noel’s ensuing death and Magdalen’s solicitor making her aware of the likely deception. Female reader not identified.
