Description
The Murder By Gaslight drama series for radio, based on real-life Victorian murders, presents a portion of Manchester Martyrs, written by Leo Knowles, and narrated by Leo McKern. The so-called martyrs rescued two top Fenians (members of the Irish nationalist brotherhood), Thomas Kelly and Timothy Deasy, from a police van in 1867, killing a policeman in the process. Five men were later caught and three hanged. Actors not identified. Ends part-way through programme, and sound distorted at end of clip.
