- Artsweek Special, presented by Philip Bacon. In two parts. The first half examines various issues including the English National Opera’s new production of Verdi’s opera, Aida, at the London Coliseum; art dealer Nicholas Treadwell’s new Denne Hill gallery in Kent; the end of the BBC musicians’ strike; financial losses for the Keskidee arts centre in London; closure of the play, Rose, in the West End in London; future of the Tramshed venue in Woolwich; deaths of theatre critic Kenneth Tynan and opera singer Ottakar Kraus; reprieve for Wimbledon Theatre; remake of the Shirley Temple film, Little Miss Marker, starring Sara Stimson; remake of J B Priestley’s stage play, I Have Been Here Before, at London’s Old Vic (produced by the Horseshoe Theatre Company from Basingstoke). The second half includes a special discussion on the fine art business, entitled What Price a Painting, following the National Gallery’s purchase of Samson and Delilah by Rubens for over two million pounds and the purchase of Turner’s Juliet and her Nurse for 2.6 million pounds.
