Description

Artsweek Special, presented by Philip Bacon. In two parts. The first half examines various issues including the English National Opera’s new production of Verdi’s opera, Aida, at the London Coliseum; art dealer Nicholas Treadwell’s new Denne Hill gallery in Kent; the end of the BBC musicians’ strike; financial losses for the Keskidee arts centre in London; closure of the play, Rose, in the West End in London; future of the Tramshed venue in Woolwich; deaths of theatre critic Kenneth Tynan and opera singer Ottakar Kraus; reprieve for Wimbledon Theatre; remake of the Shirley Temple film, Little Miss Marker, starring Sara Stimson; remake of J B Priestley’s stage play, I Have Been Here Before, at London’s Old Vic (produced by the Horseshoe Theatre Company from Basingstoke). The second half includes a special discussion on the fine art business, entitled What Price a Painting, following the National Gallery’s purchase of Samson and Delilah by Rubens for over two million pounds and the purchase of Turner’s Juliet and her Nurse for 2.6 million pounds.
