- Description
- City Week, presented by financial editor Douglas Moffitt, looking back at the week’s financial news. The British economic forecast is gloomy, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. This is no surprise, says Shadow Chancellor Geoffrey Howe, who criticises current government policies. Treasury Secretary Joel Barnett explains why it is impossible to make precise forecasts about public spending during the next year or so. The Government has come under pressure from its left wing - here represented by Dennis Canavan - to speed up public spending. Geoffrey Hilliard(?) of brokerage firm Phillips & Drew talks about what the Government is likely to unveil in the forthcoming budget. Economist Michael Surrey of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research explains about economic cycles and recession. Reporter Tom Maddocks also talks about recession and interviews Dick Grace of Conti Commodities, who answers questions about commodities prices. Anti-marketeer Bryan Gould puts forward a question to the Chancellor in Treasury Time. Mike Gardiner(?) interviews Lionel Smith of the Inland Revenue about cash flow problems. Programme produced by IRN’s Financial Unit; studio direction by Ray Gannon(?).
