- Description
- The first group of American diplomats held hostage in Iran has been released, but US President, Jimmy Carter has warned that if Iran wants to put the remaining hostages on show trial, it will be a violation of human rights. The Ayatollah Khomeini has said that the US Embassy was used for espionage and that it would be punished under Islamic law. The State Department has adopted a new blackout policy and reduced press meetings to help ensure the safety of hostages. Members of the State Department and CIA agents were sent to talk to released hostages. A military mission and the return of the Shah are still ruled out. The Shah should leave the US within three weeks and go first to Mexico and then to continue his medical treatment in Egypt. The reporter is Andrew Manderstam.
