- Description
- Report on the Law Lords’ ruling that the London Transport fare cut in October was unlawful. The cut was part of Greater London Council leader Ken Livingstone’s election promise but was challenged by Conservative-controlled Bromley Council. In an interview, council leader Dennis Barcway says the decision by Lord Scarman was a triumph for democracy. London Transport and GLC now face financial and administrative chaos. At an emergency press conference, Ken Livingstone says the decision is disastrous for Londoners. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher congratulates Bromley Council for its success in challenging the GLC. London Transport chairman Sir Peter Masefield says fares will have to increase by 150 percent and services will also be cut. Report concludes with a vox pop with Tube travellers. Female reporter not identified. Transmission date between October and December 1981.
