The Government’s decision to start forcibly deporting Vietnamese boat people from Hong Kong has been widely condemned. 51 people have so far been put on a plane back to Vietnam by armed police. But Foreign Office Minister Francis Maude is defending the deportations in the face of fierce criticism from Labour’s Gerald Kaufman, and the leader of the SLD, Paddy Ashdown. He says illegal immigrants are sent back home all over the world, and Britain has no option but to do the same.
