- Description
- Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock has for the moment averted a split in his party by agreeing to set up an investigation into the deselection of Birkenhead MP Frank Field. Field had threatened to force a by-election and stand as an independent candidate, after claiming he was dismissed from his constituency by the block vote of the unions and the influence of banned Militant supporters. Field now says he will not resign and will force a by-election but hopes as a result of the national executive inquiry, there will be a re-run of the election and he intends to stand again.
